Featured Map: Better Late Than Never
The day before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year in the United States, but all of those travelers also have to return home. Some airlnes add extra flights and/or upgauge equipment.
United Airlines is adding additional, late-night banks at three mid-continent hubs with 108 additianal departures beween 11:30 pm on Sunday and 2:00 am early on Monday:
Coming up with the aircraft to operate these special flights required additional work. The late-Sunday banks are mostly aircraft which would otherwise have been idle, but there still needs to be a corresponding movement so aircrft are where they need to end up. For example, UA 4264 departs Denver at 12:30 am for South Bend, Indiana (home of the University of Notre Dame), arriving at 5:00 am. This trip on a route not normally operated uses an aircraft which otherwise would have flown from Chicago then sat overnight in South Bend before returning to Chicago in the morning; UA 4455 SBN-DEN departing Sunday at 9:59 pm is the first half of this extra trip.
United also added one trip each day on Saturday and Sunday between San Francisco and Chicago using a Boeing 747-400, in addition to flights with the usual smaller aircraft. In this case, aircraft which would have sat idle (or undergone maintenance on a normal day) at SFO and ORD swap places in the afternoon.
Today's Featured Map shows United's extra, late-night-Sunday hub departures from Denver.
