Following the crash of UPS 2976 (SDF-HNL) last week and the NTSB's finding that the #1 engine and at least part of its pylon separated from the aircraft prior to the crash (without determination whether the separation was causal or an effect of another failure which led to the crash), Boeing on Friday recommended to the three operators of the MD-11 Freighter that they suspend flight operations while additional engineering analysis is performed. The FAA subsequently formalized this grounding as Emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2025-23-51, which prohibits further flight of any MD-11 until the airplane is inspected and all applicable corrective actions are performed. The required inspections and corrective actions are undetermined at this time.

Today's Featured Map looks at where FedEx flew their MD-11s during the same time period, and highights (in purple) where their 29 active MD-11s are currently parked:

• 8 at Memphis
• 4 at Anchorage
• 3 at Houston
• 2 at Singapore
• 1 at each of twelve other airports: El Paso, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New York (JFK), Newark, Oakland, Phoenix, Seattle, Taipei, Tampa, and Tokyo (Narita)

Whereas UPS kept their MD-11s on domestic routes, FedEx flew theirs across the Pacific as far as Singapore and across the Atlantic as far as Paris, so it's a very different map.
