On Monday, American Airlines announced that their last 26 McDonnell Douglas DC-9-80 (MD-80) aircraft, which American calls the Super 80, will fly their final revenue flights on 4 September 2019. The announcement included the final 22 revenue flights, Five will occur on 3 September 2019, with three of those flights going to Dallas-Fort Worth plus one each from DFW to St. Louis (hub for TWA, whence came half of American's remaining MD-80 fleet) and to Tulsa (American's long-time maintenance base). The final day's flights will all be to DFW except for the very last one, appropriately designated AA 80, from DFW to Chicago O'Hare. After completing their revenue flying each aircraft will fly one final ferry flight to Roswell.
One aircraft to watch will be N984TW, the very last MD-80 built. This aircraft was delivered to TWA on 1 December 1999 and is one of the remaining 28 MD-80s still flying for American.
Today's Featured Map shows these final revenue flights, with AA 80 in red, plus their final resting place in Roswell.
