On Monday, British Airways announced service from London Gatwick Airport to Oakland International Airport, BA's fifth California destination but the first from Gatwick since BA switched San Diego service from Gatwick to London Heathrow Airport over a decade ago. (Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San José are also served from Heathrow.) The new route, to be served four times per week starting 28 March 2017 using 275-seat, two-cabin, Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, will compete directly with Norwegian's thrice-weekly flights on the route using 344-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft which started on 12 May 2016
Oakland will be British Airways' fifth U.S. destination from Gatwick. Three others are in Florida—just last week, BA announced service from Gatwick to Ft. Lauderdale starting 6 July 2017, and BA already flies to Orlando and Tampa. (A fourth Florida destination, Miami, is served from Heathrow.)
BA also started flying to New York's JFK from Gatwick in May, augmenting existing JFK service from Heathrow and London City Airport.
Today's Featured Map shows British Airways' five current and planned routes between Gatwick and the United States.
