Emirates 777-300 Crash in Dubai

Earlier today, Emirates Airlines flight EK 521 from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Trivandrum, India, operated by a Boeing 777-31H (registration A6-EMW), crashed on final approach to runway 12L at Dubai. All 282 passengers and 18 crew survived but one firefighter was killed while fighting the post-crash fire.

Shortly before the crash the crew reported a go-around but the aircraft failed to climb and crashed onto the runway. Passengers and crew evacuted via slides before a fire that appeared to start in the #2 engine burned out the fuselage of the aircraft.

There were reports of wind shear near the airport. Coincidentally, the crash occured one day after the 31st anniversary of the crash of Delta 191 at Dallas-Fort Worth due to wind shear.

Today's Featured Map shows the path of the flight from southern India to Dubai.
