ANA Diversion of Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Earlier today, an All Nippon Airways (ANA) Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner registered JA804A was operating flight NH 692 from Ube to Tokyo (Haneda). While climing through FL 330, a battery problem was reported in the cockpit and a burning smell simultaneously developed in the cabin. The flight diverted to Takamatsu, landing 14 minutes after the diversion was initiated, and was evacuated via slides after clearing the runway.

ANA subsequently grounded their 787 fleet (17 aircraft). Japan Airlines (JAL) also grounded their seven Dreamliners.

Last week, on 7 January 2013, the lithium-ion battery that powered the auxiliary power unit (APU) on a Japan Airlines 787 caught fire while the aircraft was parked at Boston's Logan International Airport. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating that incident.

Today's Featured Map illustrates NH 692 and its diversion.
