Lufthansa began A380 service to North America on 28 February 2011 with several flights per week from Frankfurt to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, joining Air France with A380 service to JFK. Initially, LH 400 departed Frankfurt for New York on Monday and Friday; LH 401 returned the same day. (An A330-300 operated these flights on other days.) On 27 March, Thursday and Sunday flights were added, with LH 720 flying to Beijing the other three days of the week.
Today, Lufthansa's A380 service to New York (and to Beijing) becomes a daily operation, joining Johannesburg as daily A380 destinations from Frankfurt. Lufthansa had also flown the A380 to Tokyo (Narita) but suspended that service in the wake of the earthquake on 11 March 2011.
Lufthansa will add daily A380 service to San Francisco next months, on 10 May 2011, and daily A380 service to Miami in two months, on 10 June 2011.
