Al Maktoum International Airport, in Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates, officially opens tomorrow, with cargo service using a single 4,500 meter (14,764 foot) runway. Passenger service will begin next March and the airport is planned to grow to five parallel runways.
The first operational arrival actually occurred last Sunday, when a Boeing 777 Freighter operated by Emirates SkyCaro as flight EK 9883 landed after flying from Hong Kong. The new airport, only 45 km (24 nm) from Dubai International Airport, will be within non-stop range of nearly every major airport using the Boeing 777-200LR Worldliner. The only exceptions are in the South Pacific; Mangareva in French Polynesia is the most nearly antipodal airport.
