United Airlines announced plans yesterday to offer seasonal, thrice-weekly non-stop service from United's Newark hub to Cape Town using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Set to begin on 15 December 2019, subject to government approval, the new flight will be the first between the United States and Cape Town, South Africa's second largest city after Johannesburg. Johannesburg currently has non-stop service to Atlanta on Delta using a Boeing 777-200LR and to New York (JFK) on United's Star Alliance-partner South African Airways using a Airbus A340-600. SAA also flies from Johannesburg to Washington (Dulles) on an Airbus A330-300 with a stop in Accra (or Dakar two days per week).
